Preparedness

I don't want to re-invent the wheel. So many other people are experts on this, so I'm going to send you to them.

1. 72 Hour Pack
I have created a printable list that works for our family, but there are TONS out there. This doesn't have all the supplies, but I keep this in our packs so every 6 months (around conference) we can rotate our packs with updated supplies.

This is another great resource of an all-inclusive list. If you want more ideas, google it. SO many people have thought of so many more things than I have.

I sometimes get overwhelmed with all the supplies I am supposed to carry, so I found this link that helps me to prepare a few emergency buckets that I can grab if I want to bring ALL of my emergency gear with me.

2. Water supply.
We chose to buy a few large 55 gallon drums at Walmart, but you can buy them at a variety of places. We also purchased 10, 5 gallon containers. I like these because they're portable. If you have to leave your house, they're available.

Find more info at these links here, here, and here. This last link says how much unscented bleach to add to your water to prevent algae buildup for long term storage.

3. 3 months food supply
This is your basic foods you would use on a regular basis. I think of these as case lot sale buys. I like to think of recipes that I could use this 3 months food supply, just in case.

Find excellent instructions here, here and here on building up your supply. This is a link to help you see actual recipes you could use with this shelf stable food!

4. Financial reserve
What if ATMs weren't available? What about no electricity to use credit cards? I know if I didn't have a reserve I would be in a bad shape.  How much and in what form you store money is up to you, but I like to have cash in small bills, quarters, and silver (gold if you can afford it).

This is an excellent resource to learn more about obtaining a reserve of money here.

5. 1 year food supply.
Check out my Food Storage tab for more info.
Also, the suggestions from the Church's food storage website.

6. Non-Food Supplies
Sometimes this category gets over looked. If all trucking in America stopped, we'd be in trouble. Check out Non Food Supplies tab for more info.

7. Important Documents
What if our internet went down? Our lives would be completely different. Besides saving all of our very important information on USB/external hard drives, here are few documents that may help in your preparing.
  • Evacuation List
    • What if you had 5 minutes? 10 mins? one hour to get out of our house? With the recent fires in California this was a real possibility for many people. Here's a list that I've created that might give you some ideas of what you'd need if you left.
    • PDF Grab & Go List
    • Word doc Grab & Go List
  • Entertainment for kids and groups
    • We need to keep our kids busy! If parents are working or preoccupied I want some ideas for my kids. So I created this printable list of games & songs for kids.
    • Activities to keep kids busy
